Bachelor of Science
The Recreation/Sport Management profession has emerged as an interdisciplinary field of study. Like many other fields, it has both academic and practitioner elements. Students develop an understanding of the individual and the social dynamics of recreation, leisure, play and sports and acquire the ability to provide a wide range of services in a variety of settings addressing needs and wants across a diverse society. Employment opportunities are growing and becoming more diverse.
Some areas of employment include, but are not limited to:
- Program Coordinators/Managers in community programs such as YMCAs, community recreation programs, Boys and Girls Clubs, group homes, and community education districts
- Recreation Specialists for senior retirement villages, military posts, and correctional facilities
- Managers of fitness programs in colleges, private clubs, and corporations
- Campus Recreation Programmers in intramurals, sport clubs and camps, fitness, outdoor, facilities and event management
- Assistant High School and University Athletic/Activities Director
- Professional and semi-professional sport teams in marketing, game day operations, business operations, and fan relations
- Facility and event managers in multipurpose facilities, campus recreation, arenas and stadiums
Students may enter the program after completing REC 133 and have a grade point average of 2.5 in work taken at St. Cloud State University, or have completed a minimum of 15 credits in the major with a grade point average of 2.75 in major classes. Students are required to have a grade of "C-" or better in all major courses. Students complete various integrated learning experiences within and through the program. Students are required to complete two practicums as well as a 15 week internship. Students must complete all courses in recreation and sports management with a grade point average in major classes of 2.75 or higher, and successfully complete the comprehensive exam to be eligible for internship. Students must have a current certification in CPR and First Aid or equivalent for student internship.
