The Department of Kinesiology offers an array of undergraduate and graduate programs for students interested in either teaching or non-teaching careers in health, physical education, recreation or sport science related professions.
Early contact by interested students with the department chairperson and/or designee is highly encouraged. Transfer courses must be approved by the chairperson and/or designee for major/minor/licensure programs.
Students are responsible for either furnishing their own equipment and/or supplies or renting equipment for the following courses: PESS 115, 200, 201, 202, 204, 275. Special fees are required for the following courses: HLTH 446; PESS 200, 201, 204, 210, 222, 271, 275.

The health component of the Department of Kinesiology offers programs designed to meet the needs of individuals and agencies associated with health and safety. The programs within the component include community health majors and minors.
Approximately one-third of the necessary credits for programs in the department may be accepted in transfer.
Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or better for admission to the B.S. major program in Community Health. Must complete all major courses with a grade of "C-" or better.
In order to be eligible for the internship placement all prospective Community Health Interns must be admitted to the program, must have completed at least 70% of their Community Health major courses, must have taken HLTH 220, HLTH 430 and HLTH 481. Must be interviewed and accepted by the agency selected for the Internship before completing the Internship Application that needs to be accompanied by an official transcript. Also, interns must have at least 2.5 GPA overall and a 2.5 GPA in the Community Health major.

Health/Physical Education Major (52)
HPE 100, 207, 295, 298, 310, 320, 375, 376, 407, 420, 434, 438, 439, 447, 457, PESS 249, 300, 312, 461. To be eligible to be admitted to major, students must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA, students must complete HPE 100, 295, 298, and PESS 249. Students applying to the major must submit an essay, receiving a minimum of 7/10 on a writing rubric (see Department for specific instructions) and students must successfully complete an interview (see Department for specific instructions). Courses in the major must be taken for a letter grade. Only letter grades of "C-" or better will be accepted for the major program. Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examination (MTLE) Basic Skills Test must be taken before enrollment into the program's methods classes (HPE 375, 376, 438, 439). All areas of MTLE Basic Skills Test must be passed before enrolling in HPE 457. All courses in the Health/Physical Education Teacher Education major must be taken prior to student teaching. Students must show evidence of a Water Safety Instructor certification and have a current certification in Responding to Emergencies or equivalent for student teaching. MTLE Pedagogy and Content Area Test(s) must be successfully completed prior to applying for a Minnesota teaching license.
Program Dispositions must all be at a minimum of "2" prior to entering HPE 457. Any candidate who does not successfully navigate Disposition remediation or has received a second score of "0" or "1" in the same area will be removed from the program and may not re-apply for one complete academic year.
