Master of Science in Mathematics Education

The Profession
The Master of Science in Mathematics Education program allows students to pursue specialized study in mathematics and mathematics pedagogy. This degree is designed for teachers who are certified in grades 7-12 mathematics or community and technical college instructors who wish to improve their mathematics education knowledge base.

This degree does not lead to initial teacher licensure. Persons interested in initial licensure should contact the department chairperson.

Admission Requirements Specific to the Program

  • An undergraduate minor in math is required.
  • An undergraduate teaching program must have been completed.
  • In some situations, the applicant may be required to complete additional undergraduate work before admittance.
  • Beyond the minimum School of Graduate Studies requirements, the applicant's philosophy of teaching and letters of recommendation are considered.
  • When all official application materials are received the department will review the admission file. After review, an admission or denial letter will be sent by the College of Graduate Studies.

Length of Program — Measured by Semesters

Part-time student: seven or eight semesters taking three to six credits per semester
Note: Though primarily serving part-time students, the program may accommodate full-time students depending on course availability.

Graduate Assistantship Overview

Currently graduate assistantships are not available in the Department of Mathematics.

Master of Science — Mathematics Education

The degree of Master of Science in Mathematics Education is awarded for studies carried out under Plan A (thesis option) or Plan B (non-thesis option).  At least one-half of the Master of Science degree program must be earned in courses in which enrollment is limited to graduate students.  Courses taken for the graduate program are subject to approval by the Department of Mathematics and may not significantly overlap course content taken for previously earned degrees.

Plan A (Thesis Option) 33 credits minimum

  • Core Courses (9 credits):
    • MATH 631, 632, 633
  • Major Courses (9 credits):
    • Select from MATH 521, 522, 523, 527, 552, 553, 561, 562, 565, 580, 660, 661, 662.
  • Professional Education (6 credits):
    • Courses are selected from the College of Education based on the student’s interests.
  • Elective Courses (3 credits):
    • Courses are selected from mathematics and related disciplines.
  • Thesis (6 credits)

Plan B (Non-Thesis Option) 33 credits minimum

  • Core Courses (9 credits):
    •       MATH 631, 632, 633
  • Major Courses (12 credits):
    •       Select from MATH 521, 522, 523, 527, 552, 553, 561, 562, 565, 580, 660, 661, 662.
  • Professional Education (6 credits):
    •       Courses are selected from the College of Education based on the student’s interests.
  • Elective Courses (6 credits):
    •      Courses are selected from mathematics and related disciplines.
  • A written comprehensive examination.

NOTE: At least one-half of the credits for the master of science degree program must be earned in 600-level courses.
